Oprah Winfrey accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7. At the awards show, she delivered a speech that spoke to millions across the globe. Although the speech was not meant to be a campaign speech, it seems to have sparked the idea of Winfrey running for president in 2020, whether those were her intentions or not.

Winfrey’s speech was the most politically-related all night, as she mentioned the topics of racism, sexism, sexual harassment and the #metoo movement. Her speech opened the eyes of many, although it is still unclear whether or not Winfrey is going to run for president in 2020. After her beautifully delivered speech Sunday night, Stedman Graham, Winfrey’s longtime partner, said, “It’s up to the people” in regard to Winfrey running for president, meaning that if the people want her to run, she would. Winfrey seems to be pretty keen on this idea already. She began a column in The New York Post about the possibility of running. “Winfrey 2020” could become a reality in no time.

The idea of Winfrey running to become president of the United States in just two years is definitely reasonable. It is clear to say that it is a possibility to win the race with no government experience, as President Donald Trump has already proved this to be true. In fact, some people’s sole purpose for encouraging her to run is just to spite Trump. Statistics from National Public Radio show that in 2020, 50 percent of people would vote for Winfrey, while 39 percent would vote for Trump. The idea of Winfrey campaigning and winning the 2020 election would be a historical moment indeed, as she would be the first black woman to win the White House. I would love to tell my children and my grandchildren that I was alive to vote in the President Winfrey election.

The strong connection she is able to form with people, both in person and on television, is the reason she has support for the coming election. Her speech on Sunday proved this to be true. Others believe that her connection to the people could be at risk when running for president. Becoming president is difficult and requires many decisions to be made for the good of the country, which can cause citizens to become bitter toward the president due to their personal views. These people believe Winfrey should continue to use her warm heart to better the world as a celebrity, rather than as the president.
