Mr. Lama is new to the math department this year. He teaches two different classes: Algebra I CP and Algebra I Honors. The class is a foundational element for subsequent math courses. It focuses on the use of variables and expands upon concepts explored earlier in education. The Honors course has more advanced work and pushes students to dive deeper into the topics.
Growing up, Mr. Lama had teachers who made a really big impact on him. These teachers made such a mark on him that he wanted to do the same for others. He came into the profession with the goal of making an impact on students. Although the year just started, he made a point to talk about the numerous great conversations he’s had with students so far.
Before Westwood, Mr. Lama earned a Bachelor of Education and Mathematics at Felician University. He worked as a student teacher in Wood-Ridge, where he taught Algebra II and III courses, while attending classes twice a week. During this time, he also played Division II basketball. He found a lot of value in that experience, stating that it “taught [him] to really… learn to be with a team, [and] to handle things during tough situations”.
Outside of school, Mr. Lama loves to go fishing. He also enjoys sports, stating that he plays basketball and soccer whenever he can. This also influenced his decision to assist the school’s basketball program. He will be coaching the freshman level, as well as assisting with the JV and Varsity levels.
