Tips and Tricks for Studying for Midterms

Midterm PicMidterms are only a week away! Westwood Jr./Sr. High School will be hosting their midterms Monday, January 27 through Thursday, January 30. With so many tests in such a short time period this can be a stressful time of the year for students.

For seniors, this is your last set of midterms in your high school career and as for freshman this is just the start. Either way it is important to study and try to do well as they makeup up 10% of students’ overall yearly average. Ten percent may not seem like a lot but it is a significant portion in the grand scheme of things. If one gets A’s in every quarter, but fails a midterm or final they can drop the year average to a B. As a result, studying for midterms is nothing less of a great idea.

Westwood will follow a schedule of two midterms a day, two hours for each exam. The first one will start at 8 am and end at 10 am, which will then be followed by a fifteen minute break, and the second one will begin at 10:15 and end at 12:15. Students will be dismissed at 12:15 each day, allowing plenty of time to study for the next day’s exams.

With students given the opportunity to have extra study time after school, it is important to know how to use it wisely. Therefore, in preparation for midterms students should use the study guides given to them by their teachers and treat them as if they are gold. By following the guides students should do exceptional on their test.

Some ways to turn your study guides into studying materials are by making index cards, and quizzing yourself. Students can also study by re-reading their notes, going over prior tests and quizzes, re-writing notes and attending extra help sessions. Furthermore, it is important for students to not only study but also get a goodnight sleep and breakfast. It’s like a sport you need more than practice and preparation but relaxation too. Following the steps of sleep, food, and preparation, one is bound to succeed. Good luck on your midterms Westwood!
