On December 16 at 7:22 p.m. at Westwood High School, senior Sam McClutchy broke the record for points scored in Westwood girl’s basketball history during a game against Mahwah.

Before this game, McClutchy had scored 1,261 points. At the end of the game, McClutchy had 1,274 and she only needed 1,268 points to break the record. The record-breaking seven points were scored two minutes and 48 seconds into the first quarter of the game, way faster than expected by Westwood girl’s basketball coach Charles Collis. “I was really happy when she broke it, it happened faster than expected. She needed seven points in the game to break it. I was so confused when the buzzer went off I was like, ‘It happened already?’” Collis said.

This record is just yet another of McClutchy’s many basketball accomplishments. McClutchy is a four-year starter on varsity, and has started every game of her career. Her freshman year she was named Third Team All-County. Her sophomore year she was Second Team All-County. Last year, McClutchy’s junior year, she was First Team All-County.

By the end of this season, Collis estimates McClutchy will have a total of 1,800 points, far surpassing the previous record. McClutchy said, “I am very honored to have broken the record and I couldn’t have done it without my teammates, coaches, friends and family that have always been there to support me.”

After McClutchy’s basketball career ends at Westwood High School, she will continue to play basketball next year at Dominican College in Orangeburg, New York.
