America Day

It’s here: Tuesday, October 28, America day! On this day of spirit week, Westwood High School students are encouraged to wear anything American. Beginning with the Bruce Springsteen song, Born in the USA blasting through the hallways at 8am, Westwood has shown their true American colors all day. The colors red, white, and blue flourish in the halls and classrooms. Tee shirts with motorcycles, barbeques, and fireworks efflorescence everywhere. Students are rocking flag sweatshirts, army pants, stared and stripped head bands, and patriotic converse.

Participation from all grades is evident throughout the day. Christian Guma, a sophomore, went above and beyond to show his true patriotism. As president of his class, he highly encouraged his peers to do the same. He is wearing red white and blue from head to toe; white sweats, red shoes, a red hat, and a giants football shirt and sweatshirt, because what is more American than football? He said, “I love spirit week overall, but especially today because I get to show my support for my country.”

Nicole Netzer, Junior, says she is wearing, “Some white converse with some white and blue, because who doesn’t love that? I’m also wearing an American flag sweater, and blue jeans.” She feels that America day is fun because, “It’s cool to see everyone in our country’s colors and to show some US pride.”  Not only is participation from students evident, but so is teacher participation. Mr. Pena, the music teacher and band director wore a blue shirt and said, “I think we really need to realize how awesome our country is.”
